Please see below answers to key questions about our blood test service.

I have been asked to book a blood test at Kingston Hospital. Can I just turn up?

You will need to book an appointment to come in for a blood test which can be done via the link above or by phone.

How can I book a blood test?

To book a blood test appointment, we need you to complete the simple online form providing some personal information. After this, you will be offered a range of dates for your blood test. The whole process should take no more than 5 minutes.

Please take a note, we only accept the form generated with the Kingston Hospital letter head.

Where do I need to go when I arrive for my blood test?

The Blood Test Department is located on the ground floor, just inside the Main Outpatient Entrance of the hospital. Please note that you must book an appointment prior to attending our clinic.

What is the check-in process?

Follow the signs for blood tests and check in with the team once you arrive or you can also self-check in from your smartphone or device.

What happens if I am late for an appointment?

Blood tests for children

Blood tests for children under 7 years are by appointment only. Please call 020 8934 6403 to book an appointment. For further information please see blood tests for children.

All children under the age of 16 attending the service should be accompanied by an adult. The paediatric team are available to help children up to the age of 18 who have additional needs and may require extra support to access a blood test.

If you are given a pathology form and told to book a blood test appointment for your child, please bring this form with you on the day of the appointment. Unfortunately we do not have access to these forms on our systems and without this form we will be unable to do the blood test and another appointment will need to be booked. Please note that we are unable to accept photographs or emailed copies of the form.

What happens at the hospital during a blood test?

Please take a seat in the waiting area after you check in. It is helpful if you are wearing garments with sleeves that can easily be pushed up over your elbow or have short sleeves. At your appointment time your name will be called. The phlebotomist will read the request forms, ask you to confirm your personal details and then prepare to take your blood sample. All our phlebotomists are fully trained and highly skilled in the withdrawing of blood samples. Please discuss any concerns that you have about the procedure with your phlebotomist.

Once the samples have been taken and the needle is withdrawn, you will be asked to press on a pad to stop any bleeding. It is important that you press firmly as this helps to prevent bruising.

The phlebotomist will label all the tubes and prepare them to be taken to the laboratories for testing. If your blood test is urgent or you have been told to wait for the result, we will ensure that your sample is tested quickly.

The phlebotomist will check that bleeding from the site of venepuncture has stopped, apply a dressing and send you on your way. Results of your tests will be returned to the person who requested the tests.

Fasting blood tests

Your doctor has requested that you attend for a fasting blood test. This may be for glucose or lipid/cholesterol testing.

For this test to be performed you are required to fast overnight prior to the blood test. This means that you should consume no food or drink (except plain water) for up to 12 hours before the blood test.

You may continue to drink water during the fast but not more than the equivalent amount of fluid you would normally drink in that period.

Please continue to take any prescribed medication with water only.

Failure to comply with this fasting period may result in unclear results being obtained, which could be misinterpreted or require a repeat of the entire procedure.

If you are diabetic on insulin or diabetes medications (apart from metformin only) you do not need to fast, however please let the phlebotomist carrying out the blood test know.

Fasting for Lactose in Tolerance Test (LTT)

If you have been asked to have a lactose tolerance test please contact us to book an appointment on 020 8934 3294 or email khft.phlebtomy@nhs.net

We recommend you fast for 12 hours before the blood test. For example if you are due to have the test at 9am, you should fast from 9pm the evening before. This is because eating and drinking can affect the test results.

During this time, no food and drink (including any form of coffee or tea) should be consumed. You can however have plain water.

Please note the test will take an hour to complete:

  • First samples (0Minutes)
  • Patient will be given 50g lactose dissolved in 200ml water
  • Second samples (30 Minutes); third samples (60 Minutes)
