The Acute Oncology Service (AOS) ensures that people who develop an acute cancer-related or cancer treatment related problem receive the care they need quickly and in the most appropriate setting.
About us
The service will see patients admitted to hospital who have:
- a suspected cancer diagnosis
- a known cancer diagnosis experiencing side effects related to their treatment or symptoms directly related to the cancer itself
The role of the service is to ensure that necessary tests are carried out to enable accurate diagnosis and timely treatment.
The service is responsible for advising and supporting patients who are admitted to hospital and are found to have a cancer with an unclear primary.
The service will advise on diagnostic tests, follow up results and co-ordinate onward referrals. The nurses will provide patients with contact details to allow early discharge from hospital and where possible, diagnostic tests can be continued as an out-patient.
The team is composed of a consultant doctor and clinical nurse specialists with broad expertise in cancer diagnosis and treatment.
The service works closely with its partners at The Royal Marsden Hospital and St George's Hospital. This helps to provide good communication with the treating team to ensure appropriate tests done and treatments given as well as to provide continuity for patients.
